Being well at these times, new ways from the pastPresently, we are living through a new reality. We read about it and live it in our daily life. It is an unusual time, our habits have changed. It is not easy, it's true. There is something that we can gain, though. Among the thousands of difficulties, what can remain with us when this is all over? Keeping in mind that this is a commercial site, not a psychology or philosophy site, we do not claim to teach anything to anyone. But this site sells food. The link between food and well-being is strong and undeniable. This is what science has been telling us for decades now. So far, in forced isolation many of us devoted so much of our time to food. We made it more than the pleasure of eating well: the pleasure of preparing homemade food returns to our lives.
Cooking is art and careAt this time we discover the satisfaction to manual and creative activity. And so the kitchen unfolds its artistic and curative potential:
- filling our day, freeing our minds
- creating a visible realization to demonstrate our being alive
- training us to acquire the technical skills necessary for cooking healthy, natural food: techné for the ancient Greeks is art, an ability to reproduce or to create
- giving us the gratification of taking care of others
An ancient but modern medicineSince this is a commercial site and it is also a Greek site, a reference to Hippocrates (460-377 B.C.), the father of medicine, cannot be omitted. Although his medical practice was a far cry from modern science, it was imbued with wisdom elaborated by observation.
The geneticist Artemis Simopoulos reformulates Hippocrates' teachings in this way: "Positive health requires a knowledge of man's primary constitution and of the powers of various foods, both those natural to them and those resulting from human skill. But eating alone is not enough for health. There must also be exercise, of which the effects must likewise be known. The combination of these two things makes regimen, when proper attention is given to the season of the year, the changes of the winds, the age of the individual and the situation of his home. If there is any deficiency in food or exercise the body will fall sick." [I]
"The human body is a temple and as such must be cared for and respected at all times."According to Hippocrates, health affects both body and soul, together (holism). Dedicating ourselves to cooking, is taking care of our soul, it fills our time, gives us a goal, allows us to make healthier food choices and pay more attention to what we consume.
5 suggestions for a healthy body:
- Buy fresh food, especially lots of vegetables and legumes; vegetables will stay crisp in the fridge for at least a week.
- Cook your dishes with simplicity and imagination, enrich them with aromas, spices and sea salt in moderation; at the end of cooking, sprinkle with a handful of fresh herbs if you have them; before serving, drizzle with some extra virgin olive oil.
- Cook each dish as long as necessary to protect nutrients from heat damage.
- Alone or with company, open the windows to let fresh air in, set the table, eat peacefully. Chewing for a long time helps to better absorb nutrients and control hunger for many hours.
- Take nice walks, when you go out; if you have to stay indoors exercise in front of the open window with relaxing music.
- Relax: lie back, close your eyes, visualize walking on the beach and listen to the calm sound of the waves, feel the smell of the sea breeze, the warm sand that gives way to the weight of your body under your feet.
- Visit new worlds: read a book, let words accompany you to places, introduce you to emotions that will stay with you for days, maybe forever.
